Description
This carefully crafted collection of new works offers 15 advanced studies which are based on key orchestral excerpts for tuba. Each study is provided with background information and performance advice from the composer, Andrew Duncan, composer, conductor and Principal Tuba of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Certain titles have been selected for the new Trinity College London 2019-2022 Tuba/Eb Bass/Bb Bass Syllabus.

This study is a fanfare for solo tuba based around the tuba part to Gustav Holst’s, Jupiter from The Planet’s Suite - The Enigma Machine
This study is based on some fast, articulate elements from the tuba part in variations XI and variation XIV of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. - ..and Brahms Too… (Grade 8*)
This study is based on the first and last movements of Brahms’s Second Symphony and is in two sections. - A Bit of Bruckner
This study is based on elements from the tuba part and elsewhere from the Scherzo and Finale of Bruckner’s great Seventh Symphony. - 14 Note Fantasy
This study is based on the 14 notes from the tuba part to the 2nd movement of Dvorak’s New World symphony, which is all the tuba player has to play in the entire work! - Taken for a Ride
Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries needs no introduction and this study is based around two versions of the famous main theme. - Mahler one, for One
Perhaps the most requested orchestral excerpt for tuba at auditions is the solo from the third movement of Mahler’s First Symphony and this famous excerpt is quoted from bar 41. - Stars, Stripes and Sousa
Other than the small quote from ’The Stars and Stripes Forever March’, this study is a pastiche based around Sousa’s distinctive march writing style, but with some little rhythmical irregularities added along the way! - Being Frank (Grade 7*)
This study is based on elements from the tuba part and from elsewhere from the first and final movements of Cesar Frank’s Symphony in D. - *Napoleon, Blown Apart (Grade 6)
This study is based on elements from the tuba part to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, describing Napoleon’s defeat against Russia and his retreat from Moscow in 1812. - Try to be Modest
This study is based around elements from the tuba part from Modest Mussorgsky’s popular tone poem, ‘Night on a Bare Mountain’. - Bass Line Ballad
This study is a simple reinvention of a bass line from the tuba part in the second movement of Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony. - Veni, Vedi, Verdi
This study is based on the descending passages from the Dies Iræ from Verdi’s Requiem. - A Waltz Unravelled
This study is based on elements from the tuba part and elsewhere from the orchestral score from Maurice Ravel’s La Valse. - Berlioz in Budapest
This study is based around the tuba part to Berlioz’s Hungarian March from the Damnation of Faust, a tuba excerpt very often requested at orchestral auditions.
